In 2010, Valentino had a second wave of success after Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Picciolo designed and launched the "Rockstud" high heels. Since 2010, Valentino's Rockstud accessories have apparently been responsible for doubling the company's sales. Although Valentino's 'Lock' Bag (pictured above and below) isn't technically part of the Rockstud range, you can clearly see from its influence on the Lock design.
Available in three sizes, Valentino's Lock Bag (also known as the 'Glam Lock' bag) is adorned with a strip of large studs and a jewellery-inspired metal chain strap. Valentino has been producing this style of handbag for a number of years with new colours being released each season. It has been a particularly popular bag with fashion bloggers and social media style icons, so much so that I'd personally describe the style as a trend piece.
Valentino Lock Bag in Medium
Height 17cm / Width 27cm / Depth 7cm
- Maximum strap length 130cm / minimum strap length 65cm
- In the two photos above you can see the Valentino Lock Bag in the medium size (RRP £1,310). This size has a boxy rectangular shape and it is structured, so much so that it can stand unaided. The bag fastens with a push lock (similar to the style found 3.1 Phillip Lim Pashli bags) which does a good job at keeping the bag secure.
- The chain strap can be worn on the shoulder, or it can be doubled up (as shown below), for most people the chain won't be quite long enough to comfortably carry the bag across the body. The chain is, however, detachable, which means that it is possible to carry the Valentino Lock Bag as a clutch. Alternatively, because the chain is completely removeable, you could actually switch it out for another designer strap; embellished straps are a big trend with Fendi at the moment, but Louis Vuitton and Anya Hindmarch are also following suit.
Valentino Lock Bag in Small
- Height 15cm / Width 20.5cm / Depth 5.5cm
- Maximum strap length 116cm / minimum strap length 58cm
Valentino Lock Bag in Mini
Height 12.5cm / Width 17cm / Depth 5cm
Maximum strap length 118cm / minimum strap length 59cm
The Valentino Mini Lock Bag (RRP £1,145) is probably the best choice if you really did want a small bag. In this size, this bag reminds me a lot of Furla's Metropolis bag - which would be a much more affordable alternative if you like this style. Unlike the Lock Bag in Small, which can still hold more than you might expect, the mini-size is definitely better suited for evenings where you don't need to carry as much. It's still a lovely design, but I definitely see fewer of these bags being carried than the two larger models. Sadly I don't have a photo of the mini size to show you right now, but hopefully I will update this blog post when I find one!
What do you think of Valentino's Lock Bag?
Are there any similar bags that you'd recommend?
