This little Smythson number has stolen my heart. I don't quite know why I've fallen head over heels in love with this bag, but there's something about it's structure and size that speaks to me. Originally, this Smythson bag would have been sold with an accompanying shoulder strap, but I purchased this pre-loved from a friend and, unfortunately, she lost the strap during a trip abroad. Hotel rooms all over the world are responsible for quite a few missing treasures!
I believe that this model is the smaller of two sizes that Smythson originally produced. However, as this is now destined to be a hand-held bag thanks to the missing shoulder strap, the smaller size is actually pretty perfect. As you can see from the photographs below, it is just small enough to sit comfortably on your lap but thanks to its clever design the bag is still roomy enough to be practical for everyday use.
The bag actually features three very functional sections. The middle compartment is the largest and the most secure, and it is fastened with a luxurious shagreen closure. On either side of this middle compartment are two shallow pockets, both of which are lined in satin just like the middle compartment. These pockets are not secured so they're easier to access on-the-go, making them a perfect place to store items such as your travel-card, phone or even a book.
Considering how big the bag looks, it actually has the ability to hold quite a lot. You could easily store all of your typical everyday items (phone, keys, purse, small/medium makeup bag, hairbrush etc.) plus a book, scarf or even a cardigan. Although I do often find myself swooning over Smythson's handbags, this one of my favourite designs from their catalogue. Plus, it doesn't hurt that it's still in tremendous pre-loved condition.
